The Best Time of Year to Get Married in Greece
Choosing when to get married in Greece isn't simply a case of picking the hottest month on the calendar. It's one of the decisions that will influence almost every part of your wedding experience, from how your guests travel and where they stay to how your ceremony feels on the day itself.
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that summer is always the obvious choice. While July and August certainly deliver the classic postcard version of Greece, they also bring higher temperatures, busier islands, increased accommodation costs and far less flexibility when it comes to planning.
That doesn't make them the wrong choice, it simply means they're not automatically the best choice for every couple.
A wedding overlooking the caldera in Santorini will have very different considerations to an olive grove celebration in the Peloponnese or a beachfront villa in Crete. The season that works beautifully for one couple may not suit another at all.
Rather than asking "When is the best time to get married in Greece?", I always encourage couples to ask a different question.
"When will Greece give us the experience we actually want?"
Once you look at it that way, choosing your wedding date becomes much easier.
Greece’s Wedding Seasons at a Glance
April & May
I'd recommend these months if: You love the idea of Greece feeling relaxed, your guests exploring between events, and warm weather without the intensity of peak summer.
What to keep in mind: Early spring can still be unpredictable, particularly during the evenings, and some seasonal venues and hotels may only just be opening for the year.
June
I'd recommend June if: You want the classic Greek summer experience but would prefer to avoid the busiest weeks of the season if possible.
What to keep in mind: June is no longer a hidden gem. Many of Greece's most sought-after venues book just as quickly for June as they do for July.
July & August
I'd recommend these months if: You've always imagined a peak summer wedding and you're happy to plan well in advance to make it happen.
What to keep in mind: Higher temperatures, larger crowds, increased accommodation costs and much less flexibility across almost every part of the wedding.
September
I'd recommend September if: You want warm weather, warm seas and a slightly slower pace while still enjoying everything Greece is known for.
What to keep in mind: Early September remains one of the busiest months for destination weddings, so don't expect lower prices simply because it's technically after summer.
October
I'd recommend October if: You're planning in destinations with a longer tourist season and don't mind accepting a little more weather variation in exchange for a quieter atmosphere.
What to keep in mind: Always check when your chosen venue, nearby hotels and ferry routes begin winding down for the season.
November to March
I'd recommend winter if: You're considering Athens, Thessaloniki or another mainland destination rather than a traditional island wedding.
What to keep in mind: Many island venues, restaurants and hotels close for winter, so your options become much more limited.
Spring Weddings in Greece
If a couple came to me with complete flexibility over their wedding date, late spring is probably where I'd begin the conversation. Not because it's automatically the best season, but because it often gives us the greatest balance between beautiful weather, guest comfort and practical planning.
One thing I always remind couples is that destination weddings are rarely just one day anymore. You're welcoming people who've travelled from different countries. You're organising dinners, beach clubs, boat trips, brunches and all those little moments that become part of the memories long after the wedding itself. That's where late spring really shines.
Guests are generally comfortable enough to spend the day exploring rather than hiding from the afternoon heat, and that creates a completely different atmosphere across the whole celebration. Instead of everyone disappearing back to their rooms until sunset, they're wandering through villages together, sitting outside for long lunches or making the most of the destination you've chosen.
From a planning perspective, I also find late spring gives couples slightly more breathing room.
Popular destinations like Santorini are already busy, but they haven't quite reached the intensity of peak summer. Accommodation tends to offer a little more choice, restaurants can often be more accommodating for larger groups and simply moving guests around the island usually feels easier.
That doesn't mean it's a quiet season, it isn't. The best venues and suppliers are still in demand, particularly during May, and I would never advise leaving bookings until the last minute simply because you're avoiding July.
Spring also isn't without compromise.
Earlier in April, evenings can still feel cool enough to influence outdoor dining, and weather is naturally a little less predictable than later in the year. If you're planning an outdoor ceremony or reception, I'd always recommend having a genuine contingency plan rather than assuming Greece guarantees sunshine.
For couples who want Greece to feel relaxed, sociable and effortless, however, late spring is often where I'd start looking first.
Summer Weddings in Greece
When most people picture a wedding in Greece, they're usually picturing July. Bright blue skies. Whitewashed buildings. Long evenings overlooking the sea.
And there is no question that Greece delivers that experience.
What I always encourage couples to think about, though, is everything that comes with it.
Peak summer doesn't just mean higher temperatures. It means fuller hotels, busier roads, more expensive accommodation and suppliers who have very little flexibility because they're often working several weddings each week.
That doesn't mean you should avoid July or August.
It simply means your planning needs to start much earlier.
If your heart is set on Santorini, for example, your venue, photographer and accommodation may all need to be secured well in advance. Waiting another six months can completely change what's available.
Guest comfort also becomes much more important. A ceremony overlooking the caldera sounds wonderful at two o'clock in the afternoon until everyone is standing in direct sunshine in thirty-degree heat.
Simple decisions—moving the ceremony later, providing shaded drinks receptions or arranging transport rather than expecting guests to walk—can make a huge difference to the overall experience.
The other thing people don't always realise is how busy some of the islands become. Santorini, in particular, welcomes large numbers of visitors throughout the summer. That can affect everything from restaurant reservations and transfer times to the amount of privacy you'll feel during photographs.
None of those things are reasons not to get married there.
They're simply the realities that should influence how your wedding is planned.
Autumn Weddings in Greece
If I had to choose one season that I think is often overlooked, it would probably be autumn.
By September, Greece still feels unmistakably like summer. The sea is warm, the evenings are comfortable and many destinations are still very much in full swing. For couples, it can offer many of the things people love about July and August, but with a slightly gentler pace.
That doesn't mean September is counted as “off peak”. In fact, it's one of the most popular months for destination weddings, particularly during the first half of the month. The best venues and suppliers remain incredibly busy, and accommodation in destinations like Santorini and Mykonos can still command peak-season prices.
Where autumn begins to feel different is in the overall experience. As the season progresses, destinations often become a little less frantic. Guests may find it easier to enjoy restaurants without booking weeks in advance, popular viewpoints become slightly less crowded and there's often a little more flexibility across accommodation and transport.
For many couples, that's exactly the balance they're looking for.
October can also be a fantastic option, particularly in destinations such as Crete, Rhodes, Corfu and Athens, where the tourist season extends later into the year. The trade-off, of course, is weather.
While Greece often enjoys beautiful autumn days, conditions naturally become less predictable than they are in the middle of summer. That's not necessarily a reason to avoid October, but it is a reason to plan realistically.
If you're hoping for an entirely outdoor celebration, I'd always encourage having a contingency plan that you're genuinely happy with rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Autumn is often ideal for couples who want Greece to feel a little more relaxed without losing the atmosphere that makes it such a special place to celebrate.
Winter Weddings in Greece
Winter isn't the season most couples picture when they imagine getting married in Greece.
For many islands, it's effectively the off-season. Hotels close, seasonal restaurants finish for the year and ferry timetables become much more limited. If your dream wedding involves sunset photographs in Santorini followed by dinner overlooking the caldera, winter probably isn't the right fit. That said, Greece shouldn't be dismissed as a destination once summer ends.
Cities like Athens and Thessaloniki remain vibrant throughout the year and offer an entirely different style of wedding. Luxury hotels, elegant private dining spaces, historic buildings and exceptional food create a celebration that's less about beaches and more about culture, hospitality and atmosphere.
For some couples, that's exactly what they're looking for.
A winter wedding can also offer greater flexibility around venue availability and, in some cases, more favourable accommodation rates for guests. The important thing is to choose the destination with the season in mind.
Rather than trying to recreate a summer island wedding in December, embrace what Greece offers at that time of year. The experience will be different—but different doesn't mean lesser.
So, When Is the Best Time to Get Married in Greece?
It's probably not the answer you were hoping for, but there isn't one.
There isn't a single month that suits every couple because there isn't a single way to experience Greece.
If your priority is warm evenings, outdoor celebrations and the classic Greek summer atmosphere, June through September will naturally appeal.
If guest comfort, flexibility and a slightly more relaxed pace matter just as much, late spring or early autumn may prove to be a better fit.
The right season depends on far more than the weather. It depends on the experience you want to create.
The people you're inviting.
The destination you've chosen.
Your priorities as a couple.
Those are the conversations worth having before choosing a date.
The Planner's Perspective
You and your guests will remember whether you spent the week laughing together over long dinners, whether travelling between events felt effortless, whether they were comfortable during the ceremony and whether the destination gave them the experience they'd imagined.
That's why I never start with the calendar.
I start by asking couples how they want their wedding to feel.
Do you picture a lively island buzzing with energy, or something a little slower where everyone has time to properly enjoy being together?
Are you dreaming of a week-long celebration filled with shared experiences, or is the wedding day itself the main event?
Once we answer those questions, the right season usually becomes much clearer.
Because the best time to get married in Greece isn't simply the warmest month. It's the season that supports the experience you want to create—for yourselves and for every guest making the journey to celebrate with you.
