But some of the biggest decisions aren't obvious during a venue viewing. They're the practical details that shape how your wedding actually feels on the day—for you and for your guests.

Here are five things I would always consider before shortlisting an Irish wedding venue.
1. Where Will Your Guests Actually Stay?
A venue might advertise luxury accommodation, but what does that really mean? Does it sleep every guest? If not, ask yourself:
How far away is the nearest hotel?
Is transport readily available?
Will guests need hire cars?
Can everyone get back safely after the reception?
Will guests be split across multiple locations?
If you're inviting people from overseas, their experience doesn't start at the ceremony—it starts the moment they arrive in Ireland.
2. What Happens Between the Ceremony and Dinner?
This is one of the biggest details couples often overlook.
While you're having photographs taken, your guests are waiting.
Ask:
Is there enough seating?
Is there shade if it's warm?
Is there indoor space if it rains?
Where will drinks and canapés be served?
Does the space encourage people to relax and socialise?
That hour sets the tone for the rest of your wedding.
3. Who Will Actually Be Running Your Wedding?
During the planning process you'll usually deal with a dedicated wedding coordinator.
But who takes over on the day?
Will it be:
Your wedding coordinator?
A banqueting manager?
The duty manager?
The events team?
Understanding who is responsible when the wedding is actually happening helps set expectations and gives you confidence that everything is in safe hands.
4. What's the Plan if the Weather Changes?

Rather than simply asking if there's an indoor option, ask whether it feels like a genuine alternative.
Can the change happen smoothly?
Will your guests stay comfortable?
Does the indoor space still create the atmosphere you imagined?
A strong wet-weather plan should feel like a second choice—not a compromise.
5. How Does the Day Actually Flow?
This is something couples rarely notice during a viewing, but it can make a huge difference on the day.
Think about the journey your guests will take.
Can they move naturally from:
Ceremony
Drinks reception
Dinner
Evening celebration
...without constantly needing directions or transport?
When a venue flows well, guests hardly notice it. When it doesn't, queues, delays and confusion can quickly become part of the experience.
The Planner's Perspective
One thing I always look for when reviewing a venue is how the day will actually work—not just how the venue looks.
Guests remember whether they were comfortable.
Whether they knew where to go.
Whether everything ran naturally.
Beautiful surroundings create first impressions, but thoughtful planning creates lasting memories.
